Accelerate Through the Down Times
May 01, 2026When things tighten up (slower months, cash flow pressure, uncertainty), most practices do the same thing. They pull back. They:
- Cut marketing
- Delay hiring
- Reduce spending
- Wait for things to improve
It feels responsible, but it's often the wrong move.
One of my mentors said something that stuck with me: "Accelerate through the down times."
Here's why.
The market gets quieter
When things get tight, most people turtle up. They retreat. They get conservative. They stop pushing.
Which means the market gets quieter. There are still people buying, but now there's less competition, less noise and more attention available. That creates an opportunity for the practices that stay active.
Growth creates cash
Second, and more importantly: growth creates cash.
If you have a cash flow issue, shrinking won't solve it. Cutting expenses might give you breathing room, but it doesn't fix the problem. Revenue does, and revenue comes from:
- Visibility
- Marketing
- Follow-up
- Activity
So instead of asking, "What can I cut?" ask: "Where can I push?"
That might look like:
- Increasing outreach to past patients
- Running campaigns you've been putting off
- Following up on leads you didn't close
- Creating urgency where there wasn't any
This isn't about being reckless
You still cut what's unnecessary, but you protect and increase what drives revenue.
The practices that grow through tough seasons don't wait for conditions to improve. They create momentum anyway. While everyone else slows down, they speed up.
