Cut Your Email List in Half (A Smaller List Is a Better List)

marketing the profit weekly Aug 14, 2026

You've been told to grow your list.

Add subscribers. Offer a freebie. Run ads. More people, more reach, more revenue. That's the playbook everyone hands you.

Here's what they don't tell you: a big, cold list is actively working against you.

When people don't open your emails, inbox providers notice. Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, they all track engagement. Low open rates tell them your emails aren't worth surfacing. So they bury them. And the people who actually want to hear from you, your real community, your best patients, your warmest prospects, stop seeing you too.

Dead weight doesn't just sit there. It drags you down.

I went through my own email list this year. I used AI to pull 12 months of open-rate data on every subscriber. Then I made the call most people are afraid to make: I cut the list in half. I removed everyone who hadn't engaged in six months.

Open rates went from 38 to 40% up to 80%.

That means when I send an email now, it actually lands. It gets seen. The people on my list are there because they want to be. And that changes everything about how the list performs.

The same principle applies to your patient community. The patients who refer, who show up consistently, who engage with your content, they're your real list. The ones who booked once two years ago and ghosted? They're not coming back. And pretending otherwise costs you time, money, and marketing clarity.

Your move this week: Log into your email platform. Sort subscribers by engagement. Anyone who hasn't opened a single email in six months gets one simple, direct re-engagement message: "Still want to hear from us?" No response in a week? Unsubscribe them. No guilt. They weren't there anyway.

The people who stay are your people. Build for them.

And if you don't have an email list yet, start one this week. Even 50 engaged people are more valuable than 5,000 who don't care. Quality over quantity, from day one.

Stay Profitable, Dan
