Every Level of Growth Breaks Something
Apr 10, 2026There's a pattern I see with almost every practice in the $50K to $150K a month range. Growth starts working, and then things get messy.
- You increase marketing, and your schedule gets overloaded
- You get busier, and admin falls behind
- You hire, and systems start breaking
- Revenue goes up, and your time disappears
Most people interpret this as "Something is wrong."
Nothing's wrong. In fact, that's how you know your practice is growing.
Growth reveals the next constraint
Growth doesn't eliminate problems. It reveals the next constraint in your business.
At lower levels, your constraint was:
- Getting patients
- Generating demand
Now your constraint is different:
- Capacity
- Systems
- People
- You
If you don't recognize that shift, you'll keep trying to solve new problems with old solutions. That's where practices stall. They keep pushing for more patients, when what they actually need is:
- Better scheduling systems
- Clearer roles
- Operational support
The question to ask instead
Stop asking, "How do I grow?"
Start asking: "What breaks if I grow another 20%?" Because that's what's coming.
If you're about to hire:
- Do you have patients ready for them?
- Do you know how you'll transition care?
If you increase marketing:
- Can your team handle the volume?
- Or will things start slipping?
The practices that scale are not the ones that avoid problems. They're the ones that see the next constraint before it shows up in the numbers. That's how you stay ahead of growth instead of reacting to it.
Growth will break something. Your job is to make sure it's something you already planned for.
