Growth-Focused vs. Freedom-Focused: Pick Your Lane
Nov 07, 2025Every practice owner I meet falls into one of two camps: growth-focused or freedom-focused.
Both want profitability. Both want a business that works for them. But the path to get there looks very different.
Growth-focused owners chase scale
They want to expand locations, hire more staff and bring in as many patients as possible.
Done well, this path leads to big revenue, a larger footprint and higher long-term value. Done wrong? It's a treadmill of staff drama, cash flow crunches and complexity.
Freedom-focused owners chase control
They want lean operations, premium pricing and a patient load they can handle without stress.
Done well, this path leads to high margins, time freedom and the ability to step back without the business collapsing. Done wrong? It's staying "comfortable" but capped: earning enough to survive but never truly thriving.
Don't play both games at once
Neither path is better. But not knowing which one you're on? That's dangerous.
The worst mistake is trying to play both games at once. Expanding staff while refusing to delegate. Raising prices while chasing more volume. That's how you burn cash and burn out.
Here's your move:
- Identify your lane. Are you building for growth, or for freedom?
- Align to it. Match your hiring, pricing and marketing to that lane.
- Commit. Stop borrowing strategies from the other side.
Profitability doesn't come from copying someone else's playbook. It comes from owning your own.
So, are you growth-focused or freedom-focused? Decide this week. Clarity here could change everything.
Stay Profitable, Dan
