Seasonal Staff Pay and Room Rentals: Stop Guessing

pricing the profit weekly Oct 31, 2025

Most practice owners are still guessing when it comes to staff pay in busy vs. slow seasons.

And don't even get me started on room rentals. It feels like "bonus money" when someone rents a room in your practice. But if it's not priced correctly, it can actually eat into your profits instead of adding to them.

Let's talk about both.

Seasonal staff pay

If your patient load swings with the calendar, your payroll shouldn't be on autopilot.

Without a system, staff costs balloon in peak season and drain your account in slow months.

The fix: a seasonal pay SOP. Set predetermined ranges for hours or pay tied to your revenue cycles. This protects profit while setting crystal-clear expectations with your team. No more awkward conversations. No more last-minute cuts.

Room rentals

Renting out an extra treatment room sounds easy, until you realize your "fair price" doesn't even cover overhead. Suddenly, you're subsidizing someone else's business.

The fix: anchor rental pricing to your actual costs. That means utilities, supplies, insurance, cleaning, the works. Then add a margin on top so you're not just breaking even. You're profiting.

The big picture

When you operate without clear systems, every decision feels like a gamble. With SOPs, you take emotion out of the equation. You shift from "hope it works" to "I know it works."

Your move this week:

  • If you have seasonal swings, draft a simple pay range system.
  • If you rent space, run the math on your real costs and reset your rates if needed.

Stop guessing. Systems create stability, and stability creates profit.

Stay Profitable, Dan
