The Money Is in the Cracks

revenue the profit weekly Feb 27, 2026

A line from a mentor of mine still rattles around in my head.

"The money is in the cracks."

What he meant was a simple and brutal truth. Most businesses don't lose money because of one big, catastrophic mistake. They lose money in small, boring, unsexy ways. Little gaps. Tiny misses. Cracks in the system.

In a practice, those cracks show up everywhere:

  • How the phone gets answered (or doesn't)
  • How long it takes to return a call
  • How easy it is to get scheduled or rescheduled
  • What happens when someone cancels
  • What happens when someone falls off the schedule entirely

Most owners assume: "If people want us, they'll come back."

Sometimes they do, but often they don't. Not because they didn't like you, but because life happened, and no one followed up.

Revenue leaks feel invisible

Revenue leaks don't feel dramatic. They feel invisible.

One missed call. One unreturned message. One patient who quietly disappears. One empty spot on the schedule that never gets backfilled.

None of those feel urgent in the moment. But stacked together? That's real money.

Tight execution beats more marketing

What I see in healthier, more profitable practices isn't aggressive marketing. It's tight execution. They notice:

  • Who hasn't been in for 60 or 90 days
  • Who canceled and never rebooked
  • Where the handoff breaks down
  • Where speed matters more than perfection

They don't shame the team. They fix the system.

This is where revenue discipline lives. Not in hustle. Not in more ads. Not in working harder. It lives in asking: "Where are people falling through the cracks, and why?"

When systems are tight:

  • Revenue stabilizes
  • Stress drops
  • Teams perform better
  • Growth becomes predictable

The money isn't hiding somewhere magical. It's already there. It's just waiting for you to close the cracks.
