The Simplest Way to Fix Your Profit Problem
Apr 24, 2026At your level, most practices don't have a revenue problem. They have a clarity problem.
Money is coming in, but it's not staying where it should. And when I ask, "Where is your money going?" the answer is usually, "I mean... I kind of know."
That's not good enough at this stage.
The line-by-line expense review
One of the simplest ways to fix this is a classic expense-labeling exercise I recommend to every client.
Print out:
- Your last 2 to 3 months of bank statements
- Your credit card statements
Then go line by line and label every expense:
- P (Profit-producing): directly drives revenue
- R (Replaceable): necessary, but could be done cheaper
- U (Unnecessary): doesn't need to be there
Then color-code it:
- Green = P
- Yellow = R
- Pink = U
Here's what happens every time: the pink jumps off the page. You'll see:
- Subscriptions you forgot about
- Tools you barely use
- Expenses that don't move the business forward
It's about reallocating, not cutting everything
At your level, the goal isn't just to make more money. It's to keep more of what you make and deploy it intentionally.
That might mean:
- Cutting unnecessary tools
- Renegotiating services
- Redirecting money into marketing or hiring
I recommend doing this quarterly. Once things are tight and clean, move to an annual review.
Profit isn't something that shows up later. It's something you build by making better decisions with the money already in your business.
And sometimes the fastest way to improve your numbers isn't growth. It's clarity.
