The Three-Legged Stool: Is Your Practice Built to Run Without You?
Aug 21, 2026You built something real.
A private-pay practice that runs on your reputation, your skills, and your hands. Patients trust you. You've earned that. It took years.
But here's the uncomfortable truth most practitioners never say out loud: your business probably has one leg. You.
And a one-legged stool doesn't stand.
I had a client take a full week off recently, and not by choice. An injury sidelined her completely. Solo practitioner. No backup provider, no other revenue stream, nothing generating while she was out. Just silence and a cancelled schedule.
During that week, she did a trade session with another therapist. Late 60s. A skilled, experienced clinician, wobbling around the treatment table, telling my client, "I'm going to be working forever."
That hit her. Hard. Because she saw exactly where that road leads if nothing changes.
Here's what my mentor told me, and I've carried it for over two decades: you need three legs.
Leg one is you. Your clinical skills, your patient relationships, your reputation. That's already there.
Leg two is something in your practice that generates revenue whether or not you're in the room. Red light therapy. Supplements. A group program. A second provider. A membership. It doesn't have to be massive. It just has to be there.
Leg three is systems. The automations, the recurring revenue, the processes that run without you making every decision. Memberships that auto-renew. Referral systems that work while you sleep.
You don't build all three at once. You build one leg. You get it stable. Then you add the next.
The practitioners who build real freedom, the ones who aren't wobbling at 68 because they have to keep working, are the ones who stopped relying on one leg.
Your question this week: What's your second leg? Look at what your patients already ask for that you don't currently offer. That's usually where it lives.
My client? She's already on leg two. Red light therapy is running, and she's thinking about leg three. Sometimes the clearest vision of your future comes from watching someone else live the version you want to avoid.
